Fusing cultural vibrancy with unwavering professionalism, composer and engineer Courtney Walker – Lingo Style – brings over 15 years of experience and knowledge to modern music.
Known for his high quality production across a multitude of Toronto studios, Lingo specializes in sound design and audio engineering, and offers original beats covering Rap, Trap, Drill, RnB, Dancehall, Pop and Reggaeton.
Born in the eighties, in Kingston’s renowned ghetto Waterhouse, the Jamaican native spent his early years immersed in the music hub responsible for the great King Tubby & King Jimmy, Black Uhuru, Beenie Man and Junior Reid. Primarily raised by his grandmother, Lingo eventually moved to Canada, in ‘98, where he learnt the basics of music, rapping and writing songs, from his older brother; the one and only Suni Clay.
In the early 2000s, Suni rose to fame across Canada, and in 2004 won first place in the USA Songwriting Competition. Lingo worked closely behind as engineer, perfecting his skills with the help of multi-award winning producer and urban pioneer 2 Rude. Lingo simultaneously spent two years at The Hive Studio (Bed Tracks), mastering the art of composition and audio engineering.
In 2006, inspired by a thirst for understanding the music business, Lingo enrolled at Canada’s world class music college Trebas, to study Audio Engineering, Recording and Music Production. The following year he took a job at Kick Ass Recording Studio and Publishing, and by 2009 was teaching music composition and business with Youthlink; a non profit organization for at risk youths.
Soon enough, Lingo had worked with Canadian Hip Hop legends like Choclair, Gvine, Roc Da House and Clarke Maple, and returned to Jamaica to record Suni Clay’s 2014 album ‘Back To Yard’. Then in 2016, Ill Swag Recording Studio opened at Parklawn and Lakeshore, relocating in 2018 to Cherry Beach Studio, before moving purely online due to the pandemic.
Driven by a passion for music, Lingo’s determination is matched by his clear eclecticism and breadth of expertise. From Hip Hop to Pop, Afro to Reggeaton; no genre is out of reach. His influences range from Vybz Kartel and Lil Wayne to Michael Jackson and Bob Marley. His production credits the guidance of Quincy Jones, Metro Boom, Kanye West, and long-time friend Nineteen 85. In short, Lingo’s unrivaled versatility and skill makes him one of Toronto’s most in-demand sound designers – a must for those looking to kick start a new project.
